The 2024 report of the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee (MMMRC) found that 80% of pregnancy-related deaths were preventable. Racial disparities also persist. Black women are about 2.5 times more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth than white women. Preventing these tragedies and doing all we can to Save Texas Moms must be a top priority for our state’s leaders.

The infant mortality rate (number of deaths before an infant’s first birthday per 1,000 births) provides critical insights into the health of infants, mothers, and communities at large. There were unexpected increases in infant and neonatal deaths between 2021 and 2022 in Texas. Congenital anomalies also increased here but not elsewhere in the U.S. The 2022 infant mortality rate in Texas increased by 8% to 5.75 per 1,000 births compared to 2% in the rest of the country, according to a study in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.
